Ethanol is a solubilizer that can also be found in makeup, lotions and hair care products. It works by dissolving the ingredients of a product to help them mix together better. It also can act as a carrier or as a cleaning agent that helps dissolve soils. Ethanol is the same alcohol that's found in alcoholic beverages, but in consumer products it is used in very small amounts to make the product work better.

Triethylene glycol is an odor eliminator that can also be found in shampoos and deodorants. Due to the similarity of its name, triethylene glycol may be confused with ethylene glycol, the sweet-tasting ingredient that can be used in air conditioning systems and antifreeze products. However, it's a totally different ingredient that is an odorless liquid. We add triethylene glycol to products to counteract odors.

Nitrogen is a propellant used to dispense a product from a container. Nitrogen is a non-flammable, non-VOC compressed gas. It makes up more than 75% of the air we breathe.

Ethoxylated Castor Oil is an emulsifier that helps bind ingredients together and keep a formula from separating. Over time, it is possible for formulas in a product to separate. We add emulsifiers to our products where needed to ensure that our products provide the same performance use after use.

Propylene Glycol is a solubilizer that can also be found in cosmetics, toothpaste, food and beer. It is sometimes confused with ethylene Glycol, the sweet-tasting ingredient that can be used in air conditioning systems and antifreeze products, but it is a different ingredient. Propylene Glycol is used in our products to help ensure even distribution of the ingredients throughout a product, to help it work better. We also use it as an odor eliminator; as a cleaning agent, or "surfactant," that removes dirt; as a wetting agent; or as a carrier that enables delivery of the product to the surface. In certain products, Propylene Glycol works as a moisturizer helping to prevent a product or surface, like leather, from drying out by retaining moisture making the material softer and more pliable.

Ethoxylated Alcohol is a cleaning agent, or "surfactant," that can also be found in household cleaning products like all-purpose cleaners and automobile cleaning products. We use it in our products to remove dirt and deposits by surrounding dirt particles to loosen them from the surface they are attached to, so they can be rinsed away. Ethoxylated alcohol can also be used as an emulisifier. It helps bind ingredients together and keep a formula from separating. Over time, it is possible for formulas in a product to separate. Sodium phosphate is a corrosion inhibitor that can also be found in bath products and makeup. It helps keep contents fresh and prevent the corrosion or rusting of a can, container or dispenser. We know there are concerns about phosphates and their impact on waterways and surface water. However, sodium phosphate is used in low concentrations to limit the concentrations of total phosphate being used in SC Johnson products and potentially released to surface waters.

Sodium carbonate is a pH adjuster that can also be found in bath, skin and hair products. It alters the pH of a product to improve stability over time. Every formula has an optimum pH to make it work best. For example, a formula that’s more acidic works better for soap scum removal. Its opposite, a formula that’s more alkaline, might be more effective as a carpet cleaner. We use pH adjusters to make sure we achieve the best pH for a particular job. Also, the pH of a formula can affect how long it lasts within a container – for example limiting its tendency to corrode a can, container or dispenser. Sodium carbonate can also be used as a builder that makes a product formula clean better by affecting the molecules in the formula so they work together better.

Methylisothiazolinone is a preservative that can also be found in shampoos, skin care products and makeup. It helps maintain product quality and performance over time. Some people raise concerns about preservatives, because a small number of individuals have allergies to them just as some people have allergies to nuts or bees. But preservatives play a very important role in food, cosmetics and household products. Without preservatives, many products would not last more than a week or two before being contaminated by bacteria, mold or yeast. So, we feel the best choice is to add preservatives in the smallest effective quantity to protect our products, but to list these preservatives in our formulas so that those with allergies in the family can make informed choices.
